Taylor Products design, manufacture and distribute a wide range of ancillary equipment for the heating, cooling and process control of plastic injection moulding, extrusion and other industrial processes.
The company had an innovative product – the Insulwatt heater, which offered plastics companies the twin benefits of energy savings (an average of 5% of turnover for a plastics firm is spent on energy), and an increase in final product quality. But those claims needed to be quantified by a leading, independent body. Taylor Products therefore approached the
Polymer CIC.
Expertise and facilities at the Polymer CIC in the areas of in-process measurements, polymer processing equipment, sophisticated temperature control and energy measurement techniques, were utilised to carry out comparative trials of conventional heaters with the Insulwatt heater.
Results showed that in some cases there was a reduction of up to 45% in energy costs when using the Taylor product. A report by the CIC detailing those results gained Taylor an endorsement by the British Plastics Federation Energy Saving Initiative.
Further work by the Polymer CIC has validated the improved quality control offered by the heater. The reduced anomalies from the required processing temperature lead to a greater control regarding the overall polymer moulding process. This results in more consistent end products. In addition, because the heater is able to retain heat where needed, start-up times between each product batch were shown to be 30-40% faster, significantly increasing productivity.
The collaboration with the Polymer CIC has significantly enhanced the profile of the product, driving sales leads.
