The company, which employs around 200 people in Yorkshire, said Felimazole was the first veterinary licensed product in the US for the treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.
It is anticipated that the product will be launched on schedule within the next three months and is the second successful US approval for Dechra following Vetoryl, which was launched in January.
Dechra has also agreed a new license agreement for a specialist equine product with ANOxA Corporation of Lawrence, in Kansas, America.
The agreement will provide Dechra with worldwide rights to the sale and distribution of Eiphisol (EIPH), a patented technology for the control of exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage in performance horses.
EIPH is a common disorder in the equine racing industry; horses affected with it are known as 'bleeders' and the condition can lead to both substantial financial losses for the racing industry and serious health consequences for horses.
The EIPH project was one of four outlined in the group's half year report as being at an advanced stage of internal approval.
Currently, more than 300 healthcare technology companies operate out of the region including international corporations such as Smith & Nephew, Johnson & Johnson, Reckitt Benkiser, and Seven Seas.
The sector is growing four times faster than in other UK regions and employs more than 10,000 people thanks to one of the country’s highest concentrations of medical device companies, exceptional access to clinical trials, pioneering research and development, and specialist skills in surgical instrumentation, orthopaedics and advanced wound care. The region also boasts one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals.
