Yorkshire firm brings disaster relief to Australia

The Halifax in West Yorkshire-based firm is behind the SMART Incident Command System – a pioneering triage procedure that enables emergency workers to quickly assess the severity of injuries suffered during incidents ranging from road traffic accidents, terrorist attacks and earthquakes.
It also offers a range of core products including the SMART Tag - a high visibility, folded tag which is attached to injured patients to indicate how urgently they should be treated.
The unique tag has military standard barcodes for tracking patients and is resistant to water, chemicals and body fluids. It also allows patients to be re-triaged without the need to change their tag.
As well as developing specific products that provide objective triage for injured children, TSG has launched identification tags for emergency situations where nuclear, chemical or biological agents are suspected to have been involved.
Its products are used widely in the US, across New York State, Nevada State, Illinois, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Connecticut. According to TSG, its triage systems currently cover one in four Americans.
TSG is hoping for similar success in Australia and is currently trialling its products in the country’s Northern Territory, Tasmania and Queensland.
The business is currently targeting ambulance services in these territories as well as exploring opportunities in Australia’s other four states.
Simon Pennells, of TSG Associates, said: “There remain to be significant opportunities within the US and Europe for TSG but the interest that we’ve received from Australia has been extremely positive.
“We are also very excited about the rollout of our new training platform. Though we are very much committed to providing on-site training, we feel that our on-line offering will provide an important new revenue stream for us.”
Yorkshire is considered at the forefront of the UK’s latest advances in healthcare, making it one of the most important regions for the healthcare technology industry, and one of the fastest-growing nationally.
More than 300 healthcare technology businesses operate out of the region including Smith & Nephew, Johnson & Johnson and Covance as well as university spin-outs Syntopix and Avacta.
The sector employs more than 10,000 people and is growing four times faster in the region than the rest of the UK.
