New station entrance bid submitted

Public transport authority Metro has submitted a bid worth £13.7 million to open a new entrance to a Yorkshire railway station.
The proposed southern entrance to Leeds City Station via Granary Wharf is expected to allow commuters quicker and more convenient access to the station.
It is likely that the Department of Transport to which the bid was submitted for funding will finance 90% of the scheme.
The remainder is expected to be funded locally.
Through the scheme being developed by Metro and Network Rail, people will be able to enter and exit Leeds station from both sides of the River Aire.
Following approval of the Major Scheme Business Case, the new £15.2 million entrance could be opened in 2012.
Lifts, escalators, stairs, CCTV, help points, ticket machines and passenger information screens are part of the proposals for the new entrance.
Metro chairman Councillor Ryk Downes said: "I said when we started the public consultations that Leeds Station is at the heart of the city and the city region and feedback from people who use the station - and who live or work in the area - has been almost wholly in favour."
